Meet the Network: Paul van den Biggelaar, Sensius

The Life Sciences & Health ecosystem within the Rotterdam region is a dynamic network of companies, service providers, educational institutes, healthcare providers, and more, working together to innovate in healthcare. As Rotterdam Square, we would like you to get to know our partners in this network. This time we introduce to you Paul van den Biggelaar, CEO and co-founder of Sensius.

Could you first introduce yourself?

Paul van den Biggelaar has studied the potential of thermotherapy for over a decade. He has more than 30 years of experience in high tech, of which he spent 15 years as an executive. Before co-founding and leading Erasmus MC spin-off Sensius in 2015, Paul had co-founded and led NRGLed and HEARConcepts. He is also an entrepreneur at ThinkThrough, a company that invests in high tech ideas and concepts to turn them into products and companies. Prior to that, Paul was an executive at Nucletron, where he was Business Unit Director and later responsible for all product development. Paul has a MSc degree in Electrical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology.

What does your company do?

Sensius improves the perspective for cancer patients by using thermotherapy. Thermotherapy treatment is used in combination with traditional therapies, such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

Increasing the temperature of the tumour to 42C results in better clinical outcome and lower toxicity, leading to an increased Quality of Life and lower costs.  Sensius sets the ambition to be the best in thermotherapy through research and continuous collaboration with renowned clinical teams worldwide.

Sensius delivers controlled heating of deep-seated tumours, while at the same time preserving the surrounding tissues and organs. Our patented technology provides high performance in focus and control of the heat, easy adoption through alignment with the radiotherapy workflow and positive economics for clinics. Key opinion leaders do endorse our system.

What do you look for within the Life Sciences & Health network?

Being located in the Erasmus MC Incubator at the Erasmus MC Campus gives us a unique connection to the people who care for cancer patients every day. Although we have a different role than the healthcare professionals, it gives a bond and the ability to connect with a short walk. Sitting next to our neighbours Kaminari Medical and Spatium Medical gives the opportunity to exchange experience and be inspired by the great things they do.
