Discovery: traffic jam on DNA causes aging

Scientists have been wondering for decades: what causes ageing? Researchers from Erasmus MC have now found an important piece of the puzzle. Queuing caused by accumulating DNA damage leads to disruption of all kinds of body processes, they discovered.

That ageing has something to do with DNA damage is widely accepted by scientists – following a discovery in Rotterdam. The older the organism, the more damage in the genetic material. But exactly how that damage leads to ageing problems was still unknown. Scientists at Erasmus MC now seem to have cracked that hard nut as well.
